Service Descriptions:
ORIENTAL/ASIAN
Shiatsu, Tui na, Thai massage, jin shin do, accupressure, etc. These are compressive manipulations and stretches, which focus on specific areas of the body, elicit responses in the nervous and cirsulatory systems. The efficient use of the therapist body and performance of these techniques on a clothed client have many benefits. The effects are both reflexive and mechanical. Therapists use a floor mat and other massage accessories to have efficient results.
NEUROMUSCULAR APPROACHES
Examples: Neuromuscular, reflexology, and triggerpoint. This method is similar to swedish massage. This approach is a nervous or reflexive method. Observation of the systems reveals that connective tissue is also affected. The common threads running through all the styles are the basic concepts of activation of the tonus receptor mechanism, reflex arc stimulation, positional receptors, and applications of stretching and lengthening.
CRANIOSACRAL & MYOFASCIAL APPROACHES
Examples: Craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, deep tissue massage, and connective tissue massage. These systems focus more specifically on the various aspects of both mechanical and reflexive connective tissue functions. Both light and deep touch are used. Cross fiber friction methods fall into this category.
INTEGRATED APPROACHES
Examples: Sports massage, infant massage, on-site seated massage, pre-natal massage, and geriatric massage. These are the many styles of massage that focus on a specific type of population using combinations of methods of various forms of massage and bodywork styles.
THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE
This is the scientific art and system of assessment and systematic manual application of a technique to the superficial soft tissue of the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia, as well as to the structures that lie within the superficial tissue, by means of the hand, foot, knee, arm, elbow, and forearm. The manual technique involves systematic application of touch, stroking (effleurage), friction, vibration, percussion, kneading (petrissage), stretching, compression, or passive and active joint movements within the normal physiologic range of motion. Also included are adjunctive external applications of water, heat and cold for the purposes of establishing and maintaining good physical condition and health by normalizing and improving muscle tone, promoting relaxation, stimulating circulation, and producing therapeutic effects on the respiratory and nervous systems. These intended effects are accomplished through the physiologic energetic and mind/body connections in a safe, nonsexual environment that respects the client’s self-determined outcome for the session.
